BROADWAY HOUSE BOUGHT FOR RESIDENCE OF BISHOP FLANAGAN

Announcement is made today (Thursday) through the Catholic Transcript, official organ of the Roman Catholic diocese, of Norwich, that property, located at 174 Broadway, this city, has been purchased by the Roman Catholic diocese of Norwich as the episcopal residence of His Excellency Most Rev. Barnard J. Flanagan, bishop of Norwich diocese.

The property which is a brick construction with 14 rooms was purchased by the diocese from Mrs. Clara H. Smith, present owner and occupant. Representing the diocese in the transaction was Atty. Edward G. McKay and Mrs. Smith was represented by Atty. Paul J. Driscoll.

The house was originally built by William A. Slater, well-known in the history of Norwich, about 1880. The lot has frontage on Broadway of 121 feet and is 277 feet in depth.

In the rear of the house is a large building, which is used as a three-car garage.

It is interesting to note that the house of modelled after a French chateau and at the time of its construction Italian masons were brought to this country to build it.

Under the terms of the deed Bishop Flanagan and his staff will assume occupancy in August.

The chancery office, located in the Knights of Columbus home, at 193 Broadway, will continue in its present location.
